INTERPRETATION OF GRADE 12 ‘0’ LEVEL EXAMINATIONS

The School Results in Zambia are classified into two groups as follows:

  1. Ordinary Level Examinations commonly referred to as ‘O’ Level Examinations.
  2.  Advanced Level Examinations commonly referred to as   ‘A’ Level Examinations

However, the Examinations Council of Zambia does not conduct examinations atAdvanced Level (‘A’ Level), only at Ordinary Level (‘O’ Level).

This implies that all results obtained at Senior Secondary/High School Level are Ordinary Level (‘O’ Level). The Grading System is as follows:

  1. School Certificate(SC)
  • All the requirements for the certificate must be satisfied at one and the same examination.
  • A school certificate is awarded to a candidate who qualify as follows:

 (a) Pass in at least six subjects (including English language) with a credit in at least one of them.

(b) Pass in at least five subjects (including English language) with a credit in at least two of them.

NOTE:

  • This applies to candidates in schools who write more than six subjects and are registered as internal candidates.
  • However the internal candidates who fail to obtain a School Certificate are awarded the General Certificate of Education (GCE).

 2. General Certificate of Education(GCE)

  • A General Certificate of Education (GCE) is awarded to a candidate who obtained Grade one to eight in at least one subject.
  • If

(a)   The candidate enters and sits but does not qualify for the School Certificate;

(b)   Already holds a School Certificate or General Certificate of Education (GCE).

NOTE. Any candidate who has already attempted the examinations offered by Examinations Council of Zambia can only attempt again as a General Certificate of Education (GCE) candidate and shall always obtain a General Certificate of Education (GCE).

Also note that the General Certificate of Education (GCE) Certificates cannot be combined to make one certificate or a School Certificate.
