The then Honourable Minister of General Education- Dr Michael L. Kaingu, MP expressed optimism that the new Council would provide policy and strategic guidance to the management and staff of the ECZ so that the institution continued to innovate to improve service delivery in the management and administration of examinations in Zambia.
Speaking during the Inaugural Meeting for the new ECZ Council held at Radisson Blu Hotel in Lusaka on 6th October 2015, Dr Kaingu was pleased to inaugurate the new Councillors adding that the ECZ had operated without a Council since 24th April 2015 following the expiry of the three year term of office for the previous Council.
The Council is the supreme policy making organ of the ECZ. The Council is representative of members from various stakeholder groups and comprises individuals with distinguished professional backgrounds and wealth of experience. Over and above this, the members are of high standing in society to enable them oversee policy development and governance aspects of the ECZ.
Since inception, the ECZ had grown from a small institution that was largely dependent on the University of Cambridge Examinations Syndicate, to an independent examining board serving the specific needs of the Country and whose qualifications over the years had gained recognition both locally and internationally.
During the term of office of the previous Council, the ECZ made commendable strides and scored remarkable successes in a number of areas such as the timely release of Grades 7, 9, 12 and GCE Examination results, accumulation of the GCE Results, development and implementation of the SMS Results Release System, construction and opening of the ECZ Service Centre in Woodlands Lusaka, enhancements of mechanisms to curb and control the levels of examination leakages and malpractices and the successful hosting of the 2014 Association for Educational Assessment in Africa (AEAA)) Conference.
The new Council which was inducted had been meticulously scrutinized and found worth of this important assignment for the nation. The new Council is therefore expected to manage the affairs of the ECZ from 6th October 2015 to 5th October 2018.
